Gaza Municipality: Increasing Spread of Rodents and Harmful Insects Exacerbates Disease and Epidemic Rates

Gaza Municipality has affirmed that the rising rates of harmful insect and rodent infestations are attributed to the lack of pesticides and rodenticides required for their control, the extensive damage inflicted on water and sewage networks, and the accumulation of large quantities of solid waste in streets and neighborhoods, in addition to displacement and the absence of adequate and healthy living conditions.

The Municipality stated that the increasing spread of insects and rodents is exacerbating the prevalence of epidemics and serious diseases and poses a threat to citizens’ lives, at a time when it is facing a severe shortage of pesticides for insect control and the necessary rodenticides to combat harmful rodents.

The Municipality further explained that sewage overflows and leakage into rainwater collection ponds, coupled with the accumulation of waste in the city center, and the Municipality’s inability to transport it to the landfill site in the Juhr Al-Deek area east of the city, have created a fertile environment for rodent breeding and the proliferation of harmful insects.

Gaza Municipality calls on international organizations, including the World Health Organization, to urgently intervene and contribute to the provision of the necessary pesticides to combat rodents and insects, and to mitigate the health and environmental catastrophe facing the city.
