Gaza Municipality: The Ongoing Water Crisis Is Due to Fluctuations in Water Supplies from the “Mekorot” Line

Gaza Municipality affirmed that the continued water crisis in the city is the result of a severe shortage in water supplies received from the “Mekorot” water line, which supplies Gaza City, despite the completion of repair works in coordination with the Water Authority. The Municipality clarified that the current volume of water reaching the city is approximately 7,000 cubic meters per day, representing only one third of the quantity that was supplied through the line prior to its damage by the Israeli occupation forces in mid-January.

The Municipality explained that it is exerting significant efforts to alleviate the acute water shortage the city has been experiencing for nearly three weeks following the disruption of the line. These efforts include operating approximately 27 local wells across different areas of the city for limited hours to partially cover the deficit, in addition to supplying 1,320 privately owned submersible wells with fuel to enable their operation and help mitigate the crisis.

The Municipality further stated that the most pressing challenges currently facing the water sector include the instability and fluctuation of the “Mekorot” water line, the destruction of approximately 85% of water wells and the desalination plant in the northern part of the city, as well as the acute shortage of fuel and energy required to operate the wells for sufficient periods.

Gaza Municipality calls upon international organizations to urgently intervene and support the Municipality in providing water and in the reconstruction of the water sector, in order to reduce the severity of the critical water shortage affecting the city.
